Venepuncture Practical Skills (Perform Blood Collection)

Completion of Venepuncture training will develop the skills, knowledge and confidence of the participants to collect blood specimens safely. They will learn to select appropriate equipment used for venepuncture such as needle and syringe, butterfly and vacutainer. Participants from this non-accredited course will gain confidence in the selection of the venepuncture site, use of the collection tubes and the right order of the blood draw as well as developing knowledge and skills in collecting other pathology specimens such as urine samples.

Participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills during the training session, and will be encouraged to ask questions. A certificate of attendance is issued to all participants upon successful completion of the training.

Learning outcomes

At the completion of the training session participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge in greeting, consent and preparing clients
  • Identify the relevant anatomy, vein selection and complications associated with performing venepuncture.
  • Demonstrate throughout venepuncture simulation the correct hand hygiene, aseptic technique; correct handling of specimens.
  • Explore the problems in identifying suitable veins for venepuncture.
  • Identify and prepare the equipment to perform venipuncture including order of draw.
  • Identify complications and actions i.e. faint, anxiety, haematoma arterial puncture.
  • Identify and respond to clinical risks in specimen collection
  • Prepare clients for venous blood collection.
  • Describe the pre and post venepuncture assessment.
  • Discuss the documentation requirements of venepuncture including request forms.
  • Demonstrate 3 successful venepuncture procedures using an adult manikin arm in a simulated environment using the following equipment:
    • Vacutainer system;
    • Butterfly method; and
    • Syringe and needle method.
  • Demonstrate health and safety awareness issues including needle stick injury, infection risk, and sharp disposal and documentation.
