Practical Basic Stoma Care

It might be overwhelming and challenging for the client and their support structure to receive stoma treatment due to the fact that their body image and elimination processes have changed. However, clients can safely resume their regular daily activities with the help of supportive stoma care management in the community setting. This training course provides an overview of stoma management designed specifically for care workers so they can develop the confidence, knowledge and skills that are required to support people with stomas.

Participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills under direct supervision and will have access to a range of stoma equipment during the training session; they will be encouraged to ask questions.

What participants will learn:

  • Scope of practice, the roles and responsibilities
  • Parts of digestive system
  • Stoma – different types
  • Unique care plans and needs of clients with stoma
  • Stoma positioning
  • Different types of equipment
  • Changing an ostomy bag safely
  • Cleaning stoma site and skin
  • Infection prevention
  • Discarding waste appropriately
  • Monitoring stoma site and skin and reporting any deterioration
  • Addressing common issues and troubleshooting
  • Maintaining safety while handling body fluids
  • Complications due to stoma
  • Documentation, policies and procedures

The Practical Basic Stoma Care Training course is delivered by a registered nurse and training certificates are valid for one year. Participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills during the training session, and will be encouraged to ask questions.

A certificate of completion is issued to all participants upon successful completion of the training.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand medication and its uses, including over-the-counter and prescribed medications
  • List different routes of medication administration
  • Demonstrate understanding by listing the steps in the importance of medication safety
  • Outline the different roles and responsibilities of all people involved in medication management and how errors can occur
  • Describe the importance of safe storage of medication
  • Complete a medication chart accurately after assisting with medication administration including Webster packs
  • Recognize and respond to a medication incident appropriately, and understand the importance of reflecting on medication incidents and near–miss events.
  • List the steps of correctly checking procedures when assisting with medication in the community
  • Follow correct infection prevention and control procedures
  • Feel confident in assisting with administering medications and following the correct policies and procedures of their employer
  • Contingency plans involving healthcare professional
