Complex Wound and Pressure Injury Management

The training will develop and extend care and disability support workers’ knowledge, skills and best practice. Care workers will learn about skin anatomy, risk of pressure injury and wounds, types of wounds, how they develop, pressure injury prevention, skin care and monitoring, wound care and management. Participants are encouraged to inform the trainer of any special needs or barriers to learning prior to commencement of the training such as language, literacy and numeracy so that training can be customised according to needs.

For effective learning and interaction to achieve outcomes, the course will incorporate:

  • case studies
  • questions and answers
  • class group discussions
  • YouTube videos
  • individual practical assessment and summative assessment at the end of the session
  • correctly completing an incident report

What participants will learn:

  • Basic anatomy of the skin; skin assessment; and maintaining skin integrity
  • Prevention of pressure injury, and different types of wounds
  • Wounds and medical conditions such as diabetes
  • Recognizing wounds that require review
  • Identification and reporting of common wound complications
  • Mechanisms of wound healing; the importance of nutrition, hydration, and exercise
  • Wound care and management products
  • Checking a care plan for confirming details
  • Taking consent, and client identification
  • Maintaining hygiene processes in preventing infection
  • Complying with organisation policies, procedures, current legislation and regulations
  • The value and importance of communication and documentation including completing and reporting incidents to maintain client safety and information resources
  • Scope of practice, role, and responsibilities

The training course is delivered by a registered nurse and training certificates are valid for one year. Participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills during the training session and will be encouraged to ask questions.

A certificate of completion is issued to all participants upon successful completion of the training.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of hand hygiene
  • List the steps in assessing skin integrity and skin risks
  • Understand wound assessment, wound types and wound products
  • Explain wound complications
  • Understand skin tear and management
  • Understand common indicators of infections or worsening infections
  • Recognise signs and symptoms of pressure injury, prevention, and management
  • Recognise the implications of wound care on providing everyday assistance with activities like mobility, assistance with toileting, and assistance with meals
  • Understand simple wound dressing and products from leading industry representatives; follow care plan instructions to assess and replace dressings
  • Identify and recognise need of referral to health care practitioner
  • Documentation and reporting incidents
