This training course will equip care workers, support workers and other healthcare workers to understand the basic anatomy of the respiratory tract, and how to provide care and management of the tracheostomy. A tracheostomy is a complex procedure in which an incision is performed in a person’s windpipe (trachea) to allow a breathing tube to be inserted. Tracheostomies are typically performed only when no other options are available, and can be used temporarily or permanently. A tracheostomy helps breathing and swallowing, and thus requires careful care and management post discharge from hospital. This training course will develop the confidence, knowledge and skills required to care and assist when supporting people who require tracheostomy management and care.
Participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills under direct supervision and will have access to a range of tracheostomy equipment during the training session; they will be encouraged to ask questions. A certificate of attendance is issued to all participants upon successful completion.
