Assisting With Complex Bowel Care

The training session has been developed to provide confidence, knowledge and skills to care workers, support workers and other healthcare workers who provide bowel care assistance to their clients. This professional development course develops evidence-based practice skills and provides the background to the practical component of assisting clients to maintain healthy bowels to improve quality care in the community setting.

Participants will have an opportunity to practice their skills during the training session, and will be encouraged to ask questions. A certificate of attendance is issued to all participants upon successful completion of the training.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the anatomy related to the digestive system
  • Realise the importance of assisting clients to maintain healthy bowels
  • Explain bowel functioning
  • List the steps to maintaining bowel health, stool characterstics, nutrition and hydration.
  • List the problems in bowel functioning
  • Explain the importance of infection prevention
  • Understand the factors affecting bowel functioning
  • Iidentify the risks related to bowel dysfunction
  • Follow policies, procedures and guidelines of the organisation incorporating administering a mini enema or suppository
  • Monitor ongoing bowel health
  • Explain autonomic dysreflexia, overflow, impaction and perforation
  • Establish documentation to monitor any changes
